At least $2 billion per year is needed immediately to support federal programs for freight gateway and corridor technology and infrastructure, according to the Washington D.C.-based Coalition for America's Gateways and Trade Corridors.
CAGTC recently released a compilation of successful intermodal freight projects called "America's Freight Is America's Future: Succeeding Through Border and Corridors" at a briefing for members of Congress.
An example of a success resulting from funding supplied by the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century is the Freight Action Strategy Corridor in Washington State, said CAGTC. The corridor improves safety and streamlines goods movements. The report also identifies viable projects in need of funding. A rail switching yard relocation in Rutland, Vermont, would reduce the movement of hazardous materials through a populated area, improve traffic safety and allow responsible city growth, CAGTC said.
CAGTC is a diverse coalition of more than 20 organizations that wants adequate federal investment in America's intermodal freight infrastructure. The organization's core mission is to promote a seamless goods transportation system across all modes.
