Exel signed a five-year contract with Indonesia's Matahari department store and supermarket chain to manage the retailer's distribution and transport network.

The agreement, worth $5.5 million in its first year, covers the automation and management of Matahari's 645,835-square-foot distribution center in Jakarta. The distribution center supplies 78 department stores and 57 supermarkets throughout the Indonesian archipelago.

Under the contract, the British-based logistics provider will handle up to 7 million cases per year for Matahari and run the company's fleet of 40 vehicles.

The agreement may be extended to include Matahari's international freight as the company expands, the companies said.
