UPS opens Hong Kong hub  Reprint permission
UPS opened its new operations centre in Kwai Chung. Located at the ATL Logistics Centre in the Kwai Tsing district of Hong Kong, the 36,421 sq.ft package-sorting facility will expand the company's infrastructure and strengthen its operations in Hong Kong. "The new operations center is part of UPS's long-term strategy to meet the increasing demand of businesses in Hong Kong and the Pan Pearl River Delta's fast growing markets," said K.K. Leung, general manager of UPS Hong Kong and Macau. "The facility will increase the productivity of our operations by employing advanced package sorting technology." The HK$8 million (US$1 million) facility has a sorting capacity of 5,000 packages per hour. Together with UPS's operations hub at the Hong Kong International Airport, the Kwai Chung operations center will significantly increase the express shipment throughput capacity. "The expansion of our facilities signifies our confidence and commitment in Hong Kong," added Leung. "Since our establishment in Hong Kong in 1988, UPS is committed to facilitating international commerce for Asian businesses." In addition to logistics infrastructure development, UPS has been progressively expanding its dedicated network in Asia, and recently announced the launch of its second "around-the-world" flight to enhance service between Asia and Europe. The addition of the flight came on the heels of the U.S. Dept. of Transportation's recent tentative authorization for UPS to significantly expand its air operations in China. DOT granted UPS six additional frequencies to Shanghai immediately and six new frequencies to Guangzhou in 2005. The new frequencies will allow UPS to connect Shanghai to Japan with non-stop service for the first time, and the 2005 frequencies will allow UPS to offer non-stop service from the United States to Guangzhou for the first time.
