Global Gambits

FedEx, UPS and DHL will remain logistics heavyweights but others will challenge them

FedEx Corp., United Parcel Service and DHL/Deutsche Post World Net are the logistics heavyweights that will continue to dominate global markets, but look for other major players in Europe and Japan to make their presence felt over the next few years.

How about U.S. players? Rooted in the world's biggest economy, they are a force to be reckoned with but their immediate future as top global service providers is less certain, according to a study by Stoughton, Wis.-based logistics management consulting firm Armstrong & Associates.

The analysis is an update of an earlier Armstrong study on global logistics service providers. "The major package integrators, FedEx, UPS and DHL/Deutsche Post, have led the way in globalization," said the study. Although the strength of these players varies in different geographic markets - DHL still leads in intra-Asia markets for instance - they all will continue to expand worldwide. And these players "are improving technologies that provide supply-chain visibility, better transportation execution and event management," the study said.
